The Town of Gorham is pleased to celebrate the success of Olde School Fiber & Craft; a cozy and creatively curated craft supply store located in the heart of downtown at 18 South Street. Owners Nichole Heady, a sixth-generation Gorham resident, and her husband, David Heady, officially opened the shop on May 17, 2025, offering a vibrant and inclusive space for crafters of all skill levels.
With a mission to promote “simple living and slow making,” Olde School Fiber & Craft provides high-quality materials for fiber arts enthusiasts — from imported yarns and embroidery kits to one of Southern Maine’s largest selections of DMC embroidery floss. The shop also offers a “try-before-you-buy” area, allowing customers to test tools like knitting needles and crochet hooks before making a purchase.
The opening comes at a time when traditional crafts like knitting and crocheting are seeing a notable resurgence, particularly among younger generations seeking mindfulness, creativity, and a sense of community. With its proximity to the University of Southern Maine’s Gorham campus, the shop offers an ideal space for students and locals alike to unwind and reconnect with hands-on hobbies.
What truly sets Olde School Fiber & Craft apart is its thoughtfully executed gathering space — designed to foster connection, creativity, and community. The owners host crafting events, free knit-alongs, and workshops, encouraging locals to slow down, share stories, and learn new skills.
“As a lifelong resident, it means the world to contribute to the legacy of Gorham’s downtown,” says Nichole Heady. “Our building was once home to Turner’s Five & Dime, a staple in the village for nearly 30 years. We like to think we’re honoring that legacy by creating something timeless, welcoming, and locally rooted.”
The business’s deep reverence for Gorham’s past is reflected not only in its name but in every corner of the store — inviting customers to carry on traditions while exploring modern techniques and craft forms. Their regular newsletter keeps the community up to date with themed weeks (like their “Christmas in July” events) and free group projects like the Reina de Picas Tee knit-along.
“Olde School Fiber & Craft is exactly the kind of business that embodies the spirit of Gorham’s small-town charm and entrepreneurial heart,” said Nina Snyder, Economic Development Specialist for the Town of Gorham. “We’re incredibly proud to have them here and look forward to supporting their work as they continue to grow and bring people together through the art of making.”
